Harness Engineering: The Future of Software Engineering

· 1 min read

Really enjoyed reading OpenAI's 'harness engineering' approach—and it's the clearest signal yet that the role of Software Engineers is changing and not disappearing.

We're moving from "write code" to "design intelligence systems."

The traditional software engineer's job was to translate requirements into code. But with AI assistants becoming ubiquitous, that translation layer is becoming commoditized. What's not commoditized is the ability to:

  • Define what an intelligent system should do
  • Design its behavior under uncertainty
  • Evaluate and improve its outputs
  • Keep it aligned with human values

This is what "harness engineering" means. You're not writing every line of code anymore—you're designing the scaffolding, the guardrails, and the feedback loops that allow AI systems to operate effectively.

For junior developers reading this: your fundamentals still matter. But what matters more is learning to think about systems holistically, understanding how to work with AI as a collaborator, and developing judgment about when to automate vs. when to intervene.

The role isn't disappearing. It's evolving.
